POOR POPULATION ESTIMATED TO DECREASE BY FOUR MILLION IN 2009

Jakarta, Feb. 18 (ANTARA) - The government is optimistic that the number of poor people in Indonesia will decrease by about four million from 37.17 million to 33.714 million in 2009.

"In 2008, the number of poor population is 37.17 million, and it's estimated to reach Rp33.714 million this year. It means a drop of four million people," Communication and Informatics Minister M Nuh said here recently.

He said the poverty rate would go down although not as big as expected due to the current global financial crisis.

"We can only minimize the (global economic crisis') impacts, because in fact not only Indonesia is affected, by other countries, too," the minister said.

Despite projections on the economic growth slump (estimated to reach 4.5 percent at the lowest) and the inflation rate of nine percent), the minister was optimistic that the number of poor people would slide.

He said the government's optimism was based on three factors. First, Indonesia's economic was expected to grow despite the global financial crisis. Second, the government has prepared fiscal stimulus amounting to Rp51 trillion for infrastructure projects. Third, efforts to use domestic products have been intensified.

The minister urged the Indonesians to buy domestic products, including information technology.

"The profits and benefits will return to us. From that, the unemployment rate could be reduced," Minister Nuh said.
