SALAM UI CHALLENGES US TO REALIZE PROMISES
Depok, Feb. 18 (ANTARA) - The Islamic Nuance of Indonesia University's Students (SALAM UI), in welcoming the visit of US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton to Indonesia, has challenged the United States to realize her promises.
"There are many US Government's promises which have not been realized," Agung Nur Wijoyo, SALAM UI spokesman, told ANTARA here on Wednesday.
SALAM UI planned to stage a rally in the Hotel Indonesia Circle at noon on Wednesday, he said.
"We will respond the visit of Hillary Clinton by staging a rally to be participated in by around 200 people," he said.
Despite President Barack Obama's promise to close Guantanmo detention camp, the policy was not realized and the planned closure of the detention camp was even postponed, he said.
SALAM UI also urged the US to withdraw its troops from Iraq and create peace in the Middle East.
"These should be policies to be realized soon. Don't dismiss the world community's hope," he said.
The United States of America was also responsible for supporting the Israeli military invasion to Gaza.
"Indonesia, as the largest Muslim nation in the world, has a significant role and bargaining position," he said.
Agung Wijoyo believed that Hillary Clinton's visit to Indonesia was to see whether the US investments in Indonesia run smoothly or not.
US Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton is to visit Indonesia on February 18-19, 2009.
Clinton during her visit would assess the possibility of resuming the US Peace Corps program in Indonesia after it was discontinued in the mid-1960s, the US State Department's deputy spokesman, Robert Wood, said at a recent press briefing in Washington DC.
Clinton would also hold consultations with senior Indonesian officials to discuss the growing partnership with Indonesia
and common interests in Southeast Asia, he said.
"Indonesia is an important country for the United States. The secretary feels it's important that we need to reach out and reach out early to Indonesia," Wood said.
