PRESIDENT YUDHOYONO ADMITS INDONESIA YET TO BE PROSPEROUS

Tuban, Feb 18 (ANTARA) - President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono admitted here Wednesday the Indonesian nation was not yet prosperous nor was it already enjoying good welfare.

"But if there are critics who say we have slid backward in developmental terms, I will say, they are not honest," the president said during a working visit to Tuban district, East Java.

On the occasion the president was accompanied by First Lady Ani Yudhoyono, Coordinating Minister for People's Welfare Aburizal Bakrie, Minister/State Secretary Hatta Rajasa, Communication and Information Minister Mohammad Nuh, and East Java Governor Soekarwo.

During the visit, President Yudhoyono handed Rp1.4 trillion in direct financial assistance under the government's National Self-reliant Community Empowerment Program (PNPM) in East Java.

In addition, the head of state also signed plaques to mark the dedication of six infrastructure projects in a number of districts and witnessed the handing of Smallholders' Business Credits (KURs) by six state-owned banks to the debtors in the province.

Yudhoyono said it was inconceivable that Indonesia had not achieved any developmental progress during the past five years.

He said it was inconceivable because during the past five years he as president, cabinet ministers, provincial governors, district heads, mayors, and the people had worked hard to make significant progress.

"It is because we have not yet become prosperous that from time to time we have to work hard to develop our nation," the president said, adding that ever since the economic crisis in 1998, various efforts had been made to overcome the problem.

The president said, in terms of national security, the government had succeeded in overcoming the conflicts in Aceh, Maluku, Poso, and other parts of the country and therefore the resulting improvements in the national security situation should continue to be preserved.

Speaking about poverty eradication, the president said to attain the goal in this respect, people needed to work hard rather than place advertisements on poverty eradication in the media and blame each other.

"Reducing poverty cannot be done through advertisements on TV," he said.

He added poverty could be reduced among other things by giving poor people direct cash assistance (BLT), and free medical treatment through the people's health insurance scheme (Jamkesmas).
