CLINTON ARRIVES IN JAKARTA

Jakarta, Feb 18 (ANTARA) - US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton aboard a Boeing 757-200 airplane arrived at Halim Perdanakusuma airport at 4.08 pm local time here on Wednesday to start her two-day visit in Indonesia.

The US secretary of state's visit to Indonesia is on the second leg of a series of her Asian tour which brings her to Japan, Indonesia, South Korea and China.

Asia is the first region to be visited by Clinton after she was named US secretary by US President Barack Obama.

In Indonesia, Clinton and his Indonesian counterpart Foreign Minister Hassan Wirajuda will discuss various issues, particularly in the development of better bilateral relations in a comprehensive commitment.

"Regional and international issues of mutual concern will also become agenda items of the meeting," Wirajuda said.

The Indonesian foreign minister said that as long as the United States and Indonesia put human right issues to their highest esteem, there would always be enough reasons for both nations to strengthen their bilateral relations.

The US secretary of state and her entourage left Haneda international airport on Wednesday morning.

Her first trip to Asian countries since becoming US secretary of state breaks the tradition of her predecessors who prioritized their visit to Europe or the Middle East.

Hillary's Asian tour can be viewed as a clear signal of President Barack Obama's bid to build better relations with Asia.

Meanwhile, Hillary's visit to Indonesia, the world's most populous Muslim country, is deemed to have a great significance in restoring US relations with Muslim countries.

While in Indonesia, Hillary is scheduled to meet with President Susilo Bambang Yudhyono to discuss cooperation in education, climate change, and food and energy security.

She is also scheduled to meet with her Indonesian counterpart Hassan Wirayuda to talk on bilateral issues.
