RI, KL, THAILAND SEEKING SOLUTION TO GLOBAL RUBBER PRICE DROP

Jakarta, Feb 18 (ANTARA) - Indonesia, Malaysia and Thailand are seeking the best solution to a recent slump in global rubber prices, Indonesian Agriculture Minister Anton Apriyantono said.

One of the best possible ways to address the price drop was reducing the rubber production of the world's three biggest rubber producers, he said at a get-together with rubber growers and officials of Sorolangun regency in Jambi province on Wednesday.

The current global financial crisis has weakened the purchasing power of the international community, leading to low demands for rubber, he said.

For its part, Indonesia expected Malaysia and Thailand to reduce their rubber production amid sluggish demand for the commodity, he said.

The global rubber prices plummeted to Rp4,000 a kg from the pre-global crisis level of Rp9,000 a kg, he said.

"The extreme drop in the rubber prices has increasingly caused frustration to rubber growers, and therefore, they are called upon to reduce their production by reducing the frequency of rubber tapping," he said.
