USAID ASSISTS AMBON CITY ENVIRONMENTAL SANITATION SYSTEM

Ambon, Feb 18 (ANTARA) - The United States Agency for International Development (USAID), a US government donor institution, will help handle an environmental sanitation system in Ambon City in 2009 to 2010.

Ambon Mayor Jopie Papilaja after a meeting with head of the USAID office in Ambon Selviana J. Hehanussa here on Wednesday said that the US donor institution will be engaged in a technical cooperation with the Ambon Administration City Planning Agency in planning the most suitable sanitation system for each area in the Maluku provincial capital.

"A USAID staff member and the City Planning Agency will draw up an environmental sanitation planning map for each area in Ambon city," Papilaja said.

USAID will also train Ambon city administration personnel and the public in ways of using and maintaining sanitation in their individual areas. "If this is already in place, we will continue with further developments," he said.

Ambon is the seventh city in Indonesia as a pilot project under a cooperation with USAID through this Enviromental Service Programs, until March 2010, but if successful it will be continued.

Papilaja also disclosed that in the beginning, the donor institution rather hesitated in carrying out the Environmental Service Program (ESP) in Ambon and Jayapura, Papua Province, but in his recent meeting with USAID in Jakarta, the mayor managed to convince the head of the donor institution that the security situation in Ambon city is already conducive and will quarantee that the program will be carried out smoothly.

"They were afraid that as the security situation could change at any time, the program could fail, but I have assured them that the situation in Ambon is secure. What had happened the other day (conflict, ed.) would not happen again, except some ordinary criminal offences. Eventually they agreed to help," Papilaja said.

Besides environmental sanitation, USAID will also cooperate with the Regional Water Works (PDAM) in Ambon in helping bring order to the company's management.

The USAID assistance program for PDAM includes overcoming leaks on the clean water pipelines and minimize production cost of PDAM in supplying water to its subscribers.

"Besides overcoming the leaks, USAID will also help PDAM in Ambon reach efficiency in production cost. In certain locations, efforts will be made to reduce power consumption," Papilaja added.
