US APPRECIATES RI'S LEADERSHIP IN DEALING WITH CLIMATE CHANGE

Jakarta, Feb. 19 (ANTARA) - The US government has appreciated Indonesia's leadership in dealing with the climate change issue, according to an Indonesian presidential spokesman.

"Secretary of State Clinton expressed the US government's appreciation for Indonesia's leadership in the climate change issue," Dino Patti Djalal, a presidential spokesman, said here on Thursday.

The US appreciation was based on three things, Djalal told the press after accompanying President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono in a meeting with the visiting US State Secretary.

First, Indonesia was successful in organizing the conference of United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) in Bali late 2007. Second, Indonesia initiated a Forestry Eleven (F11) meeting of countries having tropical forests. Third, Indonesia carried out a diplomacy on Coral Reef Triangle Initiative in eastern Indonesia, and the Asia-Pacific region.

According to Djalal, President Yudhoyono also stated his hope to achieve a new global consensus through a new approach in a follow-up meeting of the Bali Conference which will be held in Copenhagen 2009.

"The President said that it would be impossible to have a global consensus if there is no US leadership, especially because the US is a carbon emitter," he said.

Yudhoyono also emphasized that in order to achieve the global consensus, developing countries and advanced countries must do more, according to Djalal.

"Not only advanced countries must do more, but developing countries, too. The point is the US must be part of the solution," he said.
Clinton arrived in Jakarta on Wednesday afternoon for a two-day visit, Feb. 18 and 19, 2009. Clinton's visit here is part of her first overseas trip as US secretary of state to four Asian countries, namely Japan, Indonesia, South Korea and China.

She held separate meetings respectively with her Indonesian counterpart Hassan Wirajuda, ASEAN Secretariat General Surin Pitsuwan, and Indonesian prominent figures here on Wednesday.
