KAMMI, GREENPEACE STAGE RALLIES AS CLINTON MEETS SBY

Jakarta, Feb. 19 (ANTARA) - At least two organizations staged rallies in the National Monument (Monas) area here on Thursday to express their sentiments on the occasion of US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton's visit in the country.

The rallies took place as Clinton was meeting President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono at the latter's office across the street from Monas square.

One rally was held by the Indonesian Muslim Students' Action Front (KAMMI) and the other by Greenpeace.

Sugeng, the KAMMI rally's coordinator, said Indonesia should reject any intervention by the US government in Indonesian affairs or US attempts to make Indonesia follow its agendas.

He also reminded the Indonesian government that its contract with US gold mining company PT Freeport in Papua was not fair and not generating proportional profits for Indonesia.

The KAMMI protesters wearing traditional dresses were prevented from approaching the presidential palace by security forces.

The Greenpeace rally urged the US government to help Indonesia deal with illegal logging activities and deforestation.

Following her meeting with President Yudhoyono, Clinton was scheduled to visit a sanitation project in the North Petojo neighborhood, Jakarta. The bath, wash and water-closet (MCK) sanitation project was implemented with financial assistance from the US government.

Clinton told Indonesian civil society figures at a dinner party here on Wednesday that the US government had a great interest in helping protect forests and coral reefs in Indonesia because their destruction would also affect the American people.
