PRESIDENT RECEIVES US SECRETARY OF STATE

Jakarta, Feb. 19 (ANTARA) - President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono received US Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton at his office here on Thursday.

Clinton arrived in Jakarta on Wednesday afternoon for a two-day visit, Feb. 18 and 19, 2009. Clinton's visit here is part of her first overseas trip as US secretary of state to four Asian countries, namely Japan, Indonesia, South Korea and China.

Her visit to Indonesia is regarded as an effort by Washington to improve its relations with the Muslim world.

She held separate meetings respectively with her Indonesian counterpart Hassan Wirajuda, ASEAN Secretariat General Surin Pitsuwan, and Indonesian prominent figures here on Wednesday.

Clinton said the United States wanted to build a comprehensive partnership with Indonesia which was a critical step for the United States' commitment to listening as well as talking to those around the world and to supporting a country (Indonesia) which had clearly demonstrated that Islam, democracy and modernity not only could co-exist but also thrived together.

The visiting US Secretary of State also said that Indonesia and the United States shared a responsibility in helping to restore the world's economy, which has been battered by a global crisis that originated in America.

From Indonesia, Clinton is scheduled to visit South Korea and China.
