Six-way meeting on peace regime opens in Moscow
MOSCOW -- North Korea and its five dialogue partners in the often troubled
nuclear talks began a two-day meeting of working-level officials in Moscow to
discuss peace and security in Northeast Asia.
The third working group meeting on the Northeast Asia peace and security
mechanism is to explore detailed ways to bring lasting peace to the region.
Russia has already presented a second draft of guiding principles, organizers
said.

N. Korean food supply short 1 million tons, grip on economy tightening: report
SEOUL -- North Korea's food supply will fall 1.17 million tons short of demand
this year, while Pyongyang is tightening control of the market and economic
activities, Seoul's Unification Ministry said Thursday.
North Korea produced 4.31 million tons of grain last year, up 7 percent from the
previous year thanks to improved weather conditions. But the country likely needs
5.48 million tons to feed its 2.3 million people, the ministry said in a report
submitted to the National Assembly's foreign affairs, trade and unification
committee.

U.S. House defense committee chairman stresses trust in alliance
SEOUL -- The chairman of the U.S. House defense committee met Thursday with South
Korea's top military official, emphasizing the importance of trust between the
two longtime allies.
"Trust is so very very important, and over the period of years, that has grown,"
said Rep. Ike Skelton of Missouri, who arrived here on Wednesday leading a
delegation of 12 Armed Services Committee members.

(LEAD) Seoul shares end down 0.55 pct on financial woes
SEOUL -- South Korean stocks ended 0.55 percent lower Thursday as investor
sentiment was dented by fresh worries about financial instability, analysts said.
The local currency fell against the U.S. dollar for an eighth day.
The benchmark Korea Composite Stock Price Index (KOSPI) declined 14 points to
1,113.19. Volume was heavy at 635.64 million shares worth 4.6 trillion won
(US$3.1 billion), with losers outpacing gainers 493 to 323.

Korean currency hits 3-month low amid liquidity concerns
SEOUL -- South Korea's currency declined to a three-month low against the U.S.
dollar on Thursday as market jitters escalated over local banks' dollar liquidity
conditions, dealers said.
The local currency closed at 1,481 won to the greenback, down 13 won, or 0.88
percent, from the previous session's close, marking the eighth straight day of
decline. The Korean currency reached its lowest level since Nov. 25, 2008.

S. Korea finds excessive antimicrobial agents in Spanish pork, restricts imports
SEOUL -- South Korea halted imports from a Spanish meat exporter after finding
excessive levels of antimicrobia agents in frozen pork, the government said
Thursday.
The National Veterinary Research and Quarantine Service (NVRQS) said more than
permitted levels of Enrofloxacin and Ciprofloxacin were found in a 23-ton
shipment of pork that was brought into the country on Feb. 9.
