PLTU REMBANG COMPLETED END OF 2009
Semarang, C Java, Feb 20 (ANTARA) - The construction of unit I and unit III of the 2x315 megawatts (MW) coal-fired power plant PLTU Rembang in Central Java, are scheduled for completion respectively in September 2009, and Desember 2009.
"The progress of the construction work has now reached 84.56 percent by February 8, 2009, and construction is being intensified around the clock," Project Secretary of PLTU Rembang Soeriarso Suryo said in Semarang, Thursday.
Suryo said some of the construction activities include cleaning of pipes of the generators prior to operation which will cause a lot of noise for some time to come.
"The ear-splitting sound will last only 30 seconds, then stopped, and then on again, and so on. Until the pipes are entirely clean, this cleaning process may take 10 days to two weeks," he said.
Suryo said he was not sure about the extent of the radius of the sound. But experience of other such projects said that the radius may exent up to 7 kilometers.
Suryo said before the pipe cleaning operation is started, the local population will first be familiarized with what is store for them, and the people are being prepared to accept the nuisance. But in compensation, the company will offer free medical treatment and training in the use of coal ash for production into building bricks.
PLTU Rembang is located 19 kilometers to the east of Rembang city, or about 135 kilometers to the east of Semarang. The closest human settlement is only two kilometers from the PLTU.
PLTU Rembang is part of the 10,000 megawatts (MW) PLTU mega project crash program announced by the government several years ago to overcome the national power crisis.
