N. Korean leader promotes close aide to senior military post

SEOUL, Feb. 20 (Yonhap) -- North Korean leader Kim Jong-il promoted a close
confidante to the post of vice chairman of the National Defense Commission, the
country's state media said Friday, another sign that Kim is consolidating his
circle in reshuffling the military.
O Kuk-ryol was appointed to the top military position second only to Kim,
according to the Korean Central News Agency.
The National Defense Commission is the backbone of the North's 1.2-million-strong
military and the highest decision making body on military actions.
