Drug trafficking growing between Nepal, India: report
Kathmandu, Feb 20 (PTI) Despite enhanced policing along
the Indo-Nepal border, narcotic smugglers from India have
emerged as the leading suppliers of cannabis and other drugs
to the Himalayan nation, enforcement officials said.
According to the annual report released by the
International Narcotics Control Board (INCB), the links
between the drug traffickers of Nepal and India has grown
during 2008.
Last year Nepalese authorities seized 10.36 kg of
mainly smuggled from India and Afghanistan, the report said.
The police also seized 50 kg of phenobarbitone and 1 kg
800 gram of methamphetamine brought from India besides 9.5
tons of cannabis, 2 tons of hashish and 105 kg of opium.
Senior Superintendent of Nepal Police Hemanta Malla said
as the cultivation of opium is legal in some Indian states,
including Rajasthan, UP and Madhya Pradesh, the
smuggled into Nepal mainly comes from India.
As many as 634 drug traffickers were serving sentence in
different jails of Nepal and many of them are Indians, the
