PRESIDENT : LET NOBODY DISTURB ACEH PEACE PROCESS
Banda Aceh, Feb 23 (ANTARA) - President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono said nobody should disturb the peace process initiated in Nanggroe Aceh Darussalam (NAD) province based on the 2005 Helsinki agreeement between the government and the Free Aceh Movement (GAM).
"I hope no party will disturb the Aceh people's decision to enjoy peace and to end the conflict in the province because it is the only way they want and have chosen. Therefore, let us protect and continue the peace process in Aceh," the President said here Monday.
The president made the statement at a function to dedicate a number of projects carried out by the Aceh-Nias Reconstruction and Rehabilitation Board (BRR) with State Budget funds.
Yudhoyono said the course the people of Aceh had taken after the Helsinki peace agreement was towards an Aceh with wider autonomy in the framework of the Unitary State of the Republic of Indonesia (NKRI).
Therefore, the head of state said, no party in the province should abandon the peace process and all should "enter a new chapter" their lives.
"We have scrapped the phrases 'Military Operations Zone' (DOM) and 'Free Aceh Movement' (GAM). We should cast away selfish designs and help to make the peace process a success," the president said.
Yudhoyono also uunderscored NAD Governor Irwandi Yusuf's call on all parties to support the process of reintegrating former GAM members into the region's society.
"With such an encouragement and hope, I have a high expectation that the rehabilitation, reconstruction and reintegration process in Aceh will continue," he added.
The head of state was on a two-day working visit to the province to dedicate 13 infrastructure projects with a total value of Rp715.3 billion, and to meet with local public and religious figures.
The projects included the Aceh Thanks the World International Park, the Tsunami Museum, the Ulee Lheue ferry port, the Aceh Polytechnic, and the Keuliling Dam.
President Yudhoyono expressed hope that the projects would be well maintained as assets of the Aceh provincial administration and that people would use them properly for their own welfare.***
