MARTTI: NO CLAUSE ON REFERENDUM IN ACEH PEACE AGREEMENT
Jakarta, Feb 23 (ANTARA) - Crisis Management Initiative (CMI) Chairman Martti Ahtisaari said the Helsinki peace deal between the Indonensian government and the Free Aceh Movement (GAM0 contained no clause on a referendum or the possibility of Aceh independence.
"The Helshinki MoU clearly states ther will be no referendum in Aceh," he said after meeting with Vice President Jusuf Kalla here on Monday.
Martti admitted he had heard cases of violence in Aceh. In view of that he called for continued investigation into the problem.
He explained that his current visit to Indonesia was made in the framework of promoting peace in Aceh. He said while in the country he would stay in Aceh for two days.
"If not for Aceh peace, I must have come here for tourism," he said.
Meanwhile, in its statement the Aceh Party said that the party would uphold the Helshinki memorandum for Aceh peace. In the statement signed by its chairman, Muzakir Mana,f and secretary general Muhammad Yahya , the party stated that it would respect the Helshinki memorandum and confirmed that the agreement made no provision for a referendum in Aceh.
All negative campaigns against the party such as accusing it as separatist, communist and others were irresponsible acts and calls for all sides to treat those who seek to disrupt political and security situation in Aceh as common enemies, it also stated.***
