PRESIDENT CALLS FOR CLEAN, NON-VIOLENT LEGISLATIVE ELECTION
Banda Aceh, INDONESIA, Feb 23 (ANTARA) - President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono called on all political parties to avoid the use of intimidation, pressure or force in the implementation of the legislative election on April 9 this year.
"Let us make the election a success. Avoid the use of force or intimidation," he said when dedicating several Aceh rehabilitation and reconstruction projects here on Monday.
The president said the implementation of the election must be open, democratic and smooth.
"We already have regulations, including bylaws, on these matters. So let us just abide by them," he said.
Regarding Aceh Governor Irwandi Yusuf's request for international observers in Aceh with regard to the participation of local political parties in the election the president said that the most important thing was that it had to be open to essure that its implementation was done fairly, honestly and securely.
Governor Irwandi Yusuf reported to the president that local election committees, namely the the Inndependent Election Commission and the Supervisory Committee had so far carried out their tasks well.
"So far, according to our monitoring, there have been no significant hurdles. The Aceh administration continues to monitor the process and supporting it without interfering in the independence of the electoral bodies," he said.***
