TNI, KPU DISCUSSING COOPERATION IN POLL LOGISTICS DISTRIBUTION

Jakarta, Feb 23 (ANTARA) - The National Defense Forces (TNI) and the General Elections Commission are currently formulating a scheme to cooperate in the distribution of logistics for this year's general elections.

"The TNI and KPU cooperation will be based on article 142, section 9 of Law No.10/2008 on legislative elections, especially on logistics distribution and the security of poll materials," TNI Chief Gen Djoko Santoso said at a working meeting with Defense Minister Juwono Sudarsono and House of Representatives (DPR)'s Commission-I here on Monday.

Santoso said in the Law, KPU is allowed to cooperate with the government, regional administrations, TNI, and the National Police (Polri).

Therefore, the TNI chief added the millitary was ready to give transportation assistance for election logistics distribution, especially to areas with no public transportation access.

But he added that the cooperation agreement between the two institutions was still being formulated.

Earlier, KPU spokesman Soeripto Bambang Setyadi said the discussions on a memorandum of understanding (MoU) between TNI and KPU were still at a preliminary stage so that further talks were still needed.

He said the TNI's assistance and support were needed in emergency situations if the company which won the tender to handle the distribution to remote areas was hampered in its work by geographic and weather conditions.***
