FORMER LEGSILATOR HOPES AHTISAARI TO GET OBJECTIVE INPUTS IN ACEH

Jakarta, Feb 23 (ANTARA) - A former legislator dealing with foreign affairs said it was hoped former Finnish president Martti Antasaari will obtain honest and objective inputs on the peace process in Nanggroe Aceh Darussalam.

Aisyah Amini, former chairperson of the House of Representatives (DPR)'s Commission I was commenting on Ahtasaari's plan to visit NAD to observe the implementation of the 2005 Helsinki peace agreement between the government and the Free Aceh Movement (GAM) which he helped forge as chairman of the Crisis Management Inaitiave (CMI).
"We need to remind him (Ahtisaari) to observe thoroughly the implementation of the Helsinki peace agreement in Aceh during his visit," Aisyah Aminy said here Monday.

The senior politician of the United Development Party (PPP) said, "We are grateful for his willingness to visit Aceh, and we hope the visit will help complete the implementation of the peace agreement."
She said the core of the peace agreement was to keep the unity and integrity of the Unitary State of the Republic of Indonesia (NKRI) and to help the people of Aceh enjoy peace, serenity, and the fruit of development without being disturbed by separatists.

"Therefore, the chairman of Crisis Management Initiative should explain the real meaning of the Helsinki peace agreement to all parties so that they can understand it and implement it properly," she said.

The Crisis Management Initiative is an independent, non-profit organization that promotes and works for sustainable security.

It also works to strengthen the capacity of the international community in comprehensive crisis management and conflict resolution.

The Finnish former president arrived here on Sunday for a four-day trip to Indonesia and met with Vice President Jusuf Kalla later in the same day.

On Monday morning the former facilitator of the Helsinki peace agreement met with President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono at the VIP room of Halim Perdanakusuma airport, moments before the head of state left for Aceh.

At the 30-minute meeting, President Yudhoyono asked Ahtisaari to continue helping to promote the peace process in Indonesia's westernmost province.

"The President asked Martti Ahtisaari to continue helping the smooth implementation of the Helsinki MoU by , among other things, ensuring that ex-GAM (Aceh Free Movement) leaders remain committed to the spirit of the peace agreement within the framework of autonomy under the Unitary State of the Republic of Indonesia," Dino Pati Djalal, a presidential spokesman, said.

Ahtisaari accepted President Yudhoyono's request because he still had contacts with ex-GAM leaders who in August 2005 agreed to sign the Helsinki Accord with the Indonesian government, Djalal said.

The president and Ahtisaari also discussed the success criteria of the Aceh peace process, namely a total end to armed conflict and the support of all elements in Aceh for peace in their province, Djalal said.
