ASEAN LEADERS TO SIGN ASEAN COMMUNITY DECLARATION
Jakarta, Feb 23 (ANTARA) - ASEAN Heads of State/government will sign the declaration of a road map leading to the ASEAN community 2009-2015 in the 14th summit in Hua Hin, Thailand, from February 27 to March 1, 2009.
"The declaration contains three ASEAN Community blue prints," ASEAN Direcor General at the Foreign Ministry Djauhari Oratmangun said in Jakarta Monday.
The three ASEAN Community blueprints consist of Political and Security Community, Economic Community, and Social and Cultural Community blueprints.
"The declaration will be signed at Asean Summit on March 1 after the informal meeting," he said.
The Declaration reflects ASEAN efforts in dealing with challenges more concretely and more timely.
The 14th summit is a good opportunity for ASEAN to show the world that the regional grouping is still very relevant in the current world political situation. The ten ASEAN member countries as a solid unity of an expanded East Asia Community have and will become a driving force of world economic growth.
The ASEAN leaders are also scheduled to have an informal meeting to discuss four main topics.
"The four topics include application of the ASEAN Charter, exchange of views on regional and international issues, fostering regional cooperation, and matters relating to the East Asia Summit," he said.
In the discussions on the application of the ASEAN Charter, he added, it will be made sure that the two of the ASEAN Community blueprints on political and security, and on social and cultural affairs, would be adopted.
The ASEAN political and security community blueprint covers democratization, protection of human rights, corruption eradication, extradition, poaching, and human trafficking.
The ASEAN social and cultural community blueprint covers protection and promotion of migrant workers' rights, environment and climatic change, sustainable forest management, religious tolerance, preservation and promotion of cultural heritage.
He added that with regard to the exchange of views on regional and international issues, the discussions will cover the Israel-Palestine conflict, the Myanmar case, normalisation of North-South Koreas, and the Chiang Mai Intitiarive.
Prior to the opening of the 14th ASEAN Summit, the ASEAN heads of state and government will also hold a meeting with youth groups, civil society members, and parliamentary representatives.
Each of the meetings planned to last about 30 minutes to one hour, will serve as a means to create a more community-based ASEAN.
ASEAN groups Brunei Darussalam, Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand, Myanmar, Philippines, Singapore, Laos, Cambodia and Vietnam.
The 14th ASEAN summit was supposed to be held in Thailand at the end of December 2008, but in view of the political chaos in Thailand the summit was postponed until February 2009.
