PRESIDENT: ACEH GROWING RAPIDLY

Banda Aceh, Feb 23 (ANTARA) - President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono was impressed by the development of Aceh province four years after the tsunami disaster.

"I have not visited Aceh for more than two years. Aceh is better now and it is rapidly progressing," he said here on Monday.

President Yudhoyono was here to inaugurate 13 projects of the Aceh-Nias Rehabilitation and Reconstruction Agency worth Rp715.3 billion of the national budget.

"Upon arrival at the Sultan Iskandar Muda and on the way to provincial capital Banda Aceh I saw happy faces, increasing buildings and community life that impressed welfare," he said.

He said before he was a president he had often come to the region to seek the right, permanent and respectful solution of the conflict in the region.

After he was elected as a president he had also called on the people to stop fighting.

Before the conflict was settled a tsunami disaster occured on December 26, 2004 killing hundreds of people to make the situation in Aceh worse.

"Today I came with gratitude to God to inaugurate rehabilitation, reconstruction and infrastructure projects," he said.

He hoped the progress and development achieved so far could maintain the peace agreement signed in Helshinki on August 15, 2005 by the Indonesian government and the Aceh Free Movement (GAM).
