NUMBER OF FEMALE SMOKERS IN INDONESIA INCREASES THREEFOLDS
Bandung, Feb 23 (ANTARA) - In the 2001-2004 period, the number of female smokers in Indonesia increased threefold.
The remark was made by Ir Nita Yudi, MBA, Chairperson of the Tobacco Community Organization of Indonesian Wormen Without Tobacco in a seminar here on Monday on the "Dangers of Smoking".
"It is a saddening fact that in the 2001-2004 period, the number of female smokers in Indonesia increased threefold," he said.
She said in 2001 the number of female smokers reached only 1.3 million, but three years later there were more than 4.5 million passive smokers in this country.
It was reported that the involvement of women in cigarette promoting advertisements had caused an increase in the number of female smokers.
She added that Indonesia ranked third in the world after China and India in the number of smokers.
"This stark reality caused us great concern our country ranks third in the world as a smoking country," she said.
According to her, almost 68 million people, or one third of the total population in Indonesia, are active smokers.
