JAMBI, N. SULAWESI TO BE POTATO PRODUCTION CENTERS IN INDONESIA
Jakarta, Feb 23 (ANTARA) - The provinces of Jambi and North Sulawesi which have better fertility in their land and good climate, will be developed into potato production centers for French fries variety in Indonesia.
In the province of Jambi in particular, potatoes of French fries variety will be developed in the districts of Kerinci and Marangin, while that in North Sulawesi will be developed in Monto Induk, South Minahasa district, Director General for Horticulture of the Agriculture Ministry Ahmad Dimayati said here on Monday.
Such potatoes of French fries variety are quite different from ordinary potatoes. In fact, potatoes of this variety is solid in fiber, well-adapted, less in water content and not easily to get rotten.
Potatoes of this variety are mostly used in McDonald, Kentucky or Texas Fried Chicken and other restaurant. Known with its delicious taste and not easy to get wilted after being fried, Indonesia is still dependent on import for potatoes of this variety.
It is for that purpose, he added, Indonesia should reduce its dependence on imported potatoes of this variety by producing them in Kerinci and Marangin districts of Jambi and South Minahasa district of North Sulawesi.
At the beginning, at least 3,500 hectares of land will have to be provided for the development of potatoes of this variety and another 6000 hectares in Meranging district of Jambi.
In the meantime, around 11,000 hectare have been provided in South Manahasa district for the development of the potato variety, Dimayati said.
According to him, the government has actually called on the private sector to directly get involved in developing potatoes of this variety in cooperation with foreign investors from Australia and Canada under a private-to-private scheme.
The government gave a chance to the private sector to develop horticultural products in the framework of creating self-produced center in the country, he said.
In the meantime, Kerinci district head Fauzi Miin as contacted said his district had actually exported potatoes of local and chip varieties to Singapore and Malaysia and not the French fries variety.
As to French fries variety, he admitted that farmers in his district are not so familiar with French fries variety due to unavailability of its seeds in the district. If the seeds could be made available, the local community would plant them, he said.
Furthermore, Dimayati said that cooperation with investors from Australia and Canada also had to do with the development of French fries seeds expected to be sold to the local farmers.
