AHTISAARI ASKED TO CONTINUE WATCHING PEACE PROCESS IN ACEH

Banda Aceh, INDONESIA, Feb 24 (ANTARA) - A political observer here said it was hoped former Finnish president Martti Ahtisaari's current visit in Nanggroe Aceh Darussalam (NAD) province indicated his commitment to keep watching the peace process in the province.

"We hope the third visit to Aceh by the facilitator of the Helsinki peace agreement between the Indonesian government and the Free Aceh Movement (GAM) will further help to perpetuate the peace process," M Adli Abdullah, a political analyst at Syiah Kuala University, said here Tuesday.

He said the presence of Ahtisaari in Aceh was also expected to make the upcoming general elections in the province run peacefully and democratically.

The 2008 Nobel Peace Laureate made his first visit to Aceh on August 15, 2006, and his second in May 2008.

Ahtisaari, as chairman of the Crisis Management Initiative and winner of the 2008 Nobel Peace Prize, came to Aceh for the third time on Tuesday, February 24, 2009.

He arrived in Jakarta on Sunday for a four-day visit to Indonesia and on Sunday afternoon he met with Vice President Jusuf Kalla.

Then on Monday morning he met with President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono at the VIP room of Halim Perdnakusuma airport in Jakarta before the president left for Aceh.

In the meeting, President Yudhoyono asked Ahtisaari to continue helping to promote the peace process in Indonesia's most-western province.

"The President asked Martti Ahtisaari to continue helping the smooth implementation of the Helsinki MoU by , among other things, ensuring that ex-GAM (Aceh Free Movement) leaders remain committed to the spirit of the peace agreement within the framework of autonomy under the Unitary State of the Republic of Indonesia," presidential spokesman Dino Pati Djalal said in Jakarta on Monday.

He said Ahtisaari accepted President Yudhoyono's request because he still had contacts with ex-GAM leaders who in August 2005 agreed to sign the Helsinki Accord with the Indonesian government.

The president and Ahtisaari also discussed the success criteria of the Aceh peace process, namely a total end to armed conflict and the support of all elements in Aceh for peace in their province, Djalal said. ***
