PRESIDENT ASKS ACEH PEOPLE TO MAINTAIN PEACEFUL CONDITIONS
Banda Aceh, INDONESIA, Feb 24 (ANTARA) - President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono has asked all elements of the public in Aceh to maintain the peaceful and secure situation so far achieved in the province.
"All elements of the public, Islamic clerics, and administration officials here should take part in maintaining the peaceful situation which all people in Aceh are enjoying now," President Yudhoyono said at a gathering with public figures, administration officials, and Islamic scholars here on Tuesday.
The president said the district administrations were also expected to overcome any problem arising in Aceh in a fair way and to make every possible effort to increase the local people's welfare.
"Our brothers and sisters in Aceh need time to become fully reintegrated and be able to live together to take their province into a better direction," the head of state said.
According to the president, Aceh was different from other provinces in the country after the signing of a peace agreement between the government and the Free Aceh Movement (GAM) on August 15, 2005 in Helsinki, Finland.
"Aceh at present has special autonomy which is different from its previous administrative status," Yudhoyono said.
Therefore, the head of state asked all elements of the Acehnese public to maintain the peace process, to understand and abide by all the rules and regulations mutually agreed on before.***
