Appeal court rejects US appeal in case of Sheikh al-Moayyad
AWASHINGTON, Feb. 24 (Saba)- Appeals court of the second circle in United States has
rejected an appeal presented by the US government against a decision of the appeals
court which acquitted two Yemeni men, Sheikh Mohammed al-Moayyad and his assistant
Mohammed Zayed.
Last October, the appeals court overturned the convictions and ordered a retrial of
the two men because of inflammatory testimony about unrelated terrorism cases in the
first trial.
The appeal court of second circle rejected the appeal of the American government,
but decision of re-trying the two men is still exist, an American lawyer Jonathan
Marks told Saba.
In 2005, al-Moayyad was sentenced by US court in 2005 to 75 years in prison and
Zayed to 45 years over alleged financial support terrorism.
Yemen has repeatedly called for the release of the two men.
Recently, Yemeni deputy ambassador to Washington Yahya al-Shawkani paid a visit to
the two men to make sure from their condition.
Al-Shawkani confirmed that their health condition is stable, saying that the visit
comes within directives of president Ali Abdullah Saleh to follow up the case of the
Sheikh and his companion.
