GOVT PLANS TO CARRY OUT TRANSMIGRATION PROJECTS IN BORDER REGIONS

Jakarta, Feb 25 (ANTARA) - The Indonesian government plans to carry out a transmigration program in border areas and outermost islands throughout the country to ensure national territorial integrity and empower the local people.

"Border areas and outermost islands have to be managed in order to safeguard territorial integrity and empower the local population," manpower and transmigration minister Erman Suparno said in a press statement here on Wednesday.

During a visit to a transmigration site in Simanggaris, Nunukan, East Kalimantan, that day, the minister said that the program was also aimed at absorbing former Indonesian migrant workers in Malaysia.

A total of 620 families are currently living in Simanggaris including 218 families of former migrant workers in Tawau, Malaysia, and transmigrants from East and West Nusa Tenggara provinces, developing oilpalm plantations.

"Former migrant workers in Malaysia hailed the program. They have even asked me to expand the transmigration area," he said.

The minister said that the program could also be used to accomodate laid-off migrant workers from Malaysia. "They could be trained through vocational training programs to be organized by the manpower ministry to improve their skills for employment or professional change so that they need not return to their home villages," he said.

While in Simanggaris the minister inspected schools for transmigrants' children and an palmoil factory to process the farmers' produce.
