ELECTIONS TO PROCEED IN RELATIVELY SAFE WAYS : LEGISLATOR
Jakarta, Feb 25 (ANTARA) - The upcoming general elections will proceed in relatively secure ways so people can participate in the democratic exercises without worry about their safety, a legislator said here Wednesday citing an intelligence prognosis.
"The State Intelligence Agency (BIN) only foresees the possibility of sectoral disruptions but no signs of possible disruptions of inconstitutional nature," Yuddy Chrisnandi, a member of the House of Representatives (DPR)'s Commission I (security, information and foreign affairs) said.
He made the statement in response to newsmen's questions about the important issues raised at a meeting between the House Commission and BIN Chief Syamsir Siregar earlier in the day.
"In short, no significant security disruption is likely to happen during the legislative or presidential elections this year," he said.
Therefore, he said, the people could exercise their voting right without feeling worried about their safety.
He said BIN had only seen signs of possible sectoral disruptions in the elections. "It has not perceived any signs of disruptions with constitutional consequences such as were perpetrated by GAM in the past," he said referring to the now defunct separatist armed movement in Aceh.
Meanwhile, according to other DPR sources, BIN Chief Syamsir Siregar had admitted there were security threats in Aceh but they would not disrupt the election proceses. "Disruptions are likely to happen but they will not be significant," he said.
Therefore, Siregar called on the military (TNI) to be neutral and on all parties not to make statements or spread rumors that could disturb the implementation of the elections.
