RI HAS WORLD'S FOURTH LONGEST COASTLINE
Jakarta, Feb. 25 (ANTARA) - Indonesia has coastlines totaling 95,181 km in length making it the country with fourth longest coastline in the world, a maritime official said.
"There was a correction from the UN recently. In fact, our coastlines are 95,181 km long," Rizald Max Rompas, secretary of the Indonesian Marine Council, said at a workshop on "Perceptions of Politicians on the Marine Sector as a Mainstream in National Development," here on Tuesday.
The United Nations (UN) announced in 2008 that the Indonesian coastline was 95,181 km long, not 81,000 km as believed before, he said.
With the correction announced by the UN, Indonesia's coastline was now the world's fourth longest after the United States, Canada and Russia, he said.
Previously, Canada was on top of the ranking list with a coastline of 243,792 km and 52,455 islands.
"Meanwhile, the number of Indonesian islands is not over 17,500 but around 17.480," he said.
As the largest archipelago with three-fourth of its territory consisting of water, Indonesia's marine sector is contributing US$140 billion to state revenue annually, Rompas said.
"The amount does not yet include the contribution of the offshore oil and gas sectors," he said.
