RI, INDIA POTENTIAL PLAYERS IN ASIAN SECURITY : ARMY CHIEF
Jakarta, Feb 25 (ANTARA) - Indonesian Army Chief of Staff General Agustadi Sasongko Purnomo said Indonesia and India could both play an important role in ensuring security stability in the Asian region.
"Indonesia and India have almost similar characteristics as, for instance, they both have a large population so that they can both play a greater role to safeguard regional stability," he said when receiving Indian Army Chief of Staff General Deepak Kapoor here Wednesday.
With regard to regional security stability, Agustadi said he had proposed to General Kapoor that the two armies open a direct interaction and information exchange line between the Indonesian military command in Aceh and the Indian military command in Andaman, Nicobar.
He said relations between the Indonesian and Indian governments were going well as they were marked by exchange of visits by their highest officials such as by President Yudhoyono and the Indonesian defense minister to India in 2005 and the Indian defense minister's and Indian president's visits to Indonesia respectively in 2007 and 2008.
"However, cooperation between the two countries' armies have so far still been limited to training and education exchanges," he said.
But the Indonesian Army and the Indian military attache in Jakarta had held pre-Army-to-Army talks in 2008 as an initial step toward increased cooperation between the two countries' militaries, Agustadi said.
On Thursday, General Kapoor was scheduled to visit Indonesia's arms manufacturing company PT Pindad.
