FLOODS AGAIN INUNDATE MADIUN

Madiun, East Java, Feb. 25 (ANTARA) - Floods triggered by incessant downpours over the past two days, inundated eight villages in two sub-districts, Madiun District, East Java, on Wednesday.

The flood-affected villages were Jeruk Gulung, Balerejo, Sapelan, Garon, Sogo, and Kedungjati in Balerejo sub-district, as well as Kedungrejo and Kedungmaron in Pilangkenceng sub-district, Agus Pramono of the Madiun district administration, said here on Wednesday.

"The floodwaters began to submerge a number of houses at 2.00 am today. The water level is varied from a half meter to one meter high. However, we are still collecting data on the number of inundated houses," he said.

The waters came from Kare and Gemarang areas and triggered rivers in Sempul and Garon to overflow, he said.

The Madiun authorities have prepared rubber boats and relief aid to help flood victims.

Madiun District Head Muhtarom visited flood-affected Sogo village to have a close look at the condition of the village.

Late January 2009, Madiun was hit by floods and landslides which destroyed at least 16 houses.

The current rainy season has triggered floods and landslides in various parts of Indonesia, including in East Java, Central Java, West Java, South Sulawesi, East Kalimantan, and Aceh provinces.

La Nina, which is developing into Northern Hemisphere Spring 2009, is expected to cause above-average precipitation over Indonesia, during January-March 2009, according to the US NOAA's Climate Prediction Center (CPC) recently.
