SOLO TO HOST ASIA-PACIFIC HOUSING MINISTERIAL CONFERENCE
Solo, Feb 25 (ANTARA) - Central Java's cultural city of Solo is to host an Asia-Pacific Public Housing Ministerial conference from May 10-12, 2010, Public Housing Minister Yusuf Asy'ari said here on Wednesday.
The minister made the remark at the first corner-stone laying of five-story dormitories for Sebelas Maret University (UNS) students and Surakarta Muhammadiyah University (UMS) students.
Yusuf Asy'ari said Solo was chosen to host the international conference because of the rapid development of public housing construction in the city in the framework of regional autonomy.
He said in April this year, a national housing congress would be held for the second time after the first one in 1951 but the venue and the date had yet to be decided.
The congress which was to be held after the general elections had been proposed by a number of cities such as Palembang, Surabaya, Bandung, and Batam.
"We are going to submit the results of the national housing congress to the next president. But the most important thing about the housing problem is that there must be a clear reference for its solution," the minister said.
The five-story dormitory with 98 rooms for the students of UNS is built at Kentingan, Jebres subdistrict on a 4,750 square-meter plot of land, and the one for UMS students is located at Gonilan, Kartasura subdistrict, Sukoharjo district.
