POWER BILL ARREARS IN JAKARTA ONLY TWO PERCENT

Jakarta, 25/2 (ANTARA) - PT PLN Distribusi Jakarta Raya (Disjaya) and Tangerang said that in 2008, power bill arrears reached only two percent of the total income of state power company PT PLN.

General Manager of PLN covering Disjaya and Tangerang Purnomo Willy said following the signing of a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the High Prosecution Office in Jakarta on Wednesday said that of the total income of PLN Disjaya and Tangerang in 2008 amounting to Rp21 trillion, the arrears stood only at Rp420 billion.

"Next year we will try to reduce the arrears," he said.

He also said that in the current global economic crisis, it appears that the arrears may increase.

Willy said, whatever the reasons for the arrears, subscribers failing to pay their power bills on time will be fined, with the proceeds paid to the company's coffers.

In the meantime, PLN's deputy communications manager covering Disjaya and Tangerang Sampurno said some of the proceeds of the fines will be used to fund the operations of the team dealing with illegal power consumption.

Last year, PLN Disjaya and Tangerang managed to save Rp 160 billion worth of state revenue from action against illegal power consumption.

Head of the Jakarta High Prosecution Office Andi Nirwanto assured that his office was ready to help PLN deal with any legal action with a view to securing state assets.
