BULOG: INDONESIA TO EXPORT 100,000 TONS OF SUPER RICE IN 2009

Jakarta, Feb 25 (ANTARA) - Indonesia, in the beginning, will export 100,000 tons of super quality rice to some countries this year, which was still being processed by the trade ministry, a top official of the National Logisitic Agency (Bulog) says.

Speaking to the press on the sidelines of a morning coffee meeting with state company executives at the Antara building here on Wednesday, Bulog Chairman Mustafa Abubakar said the exports would be carried out every month to Japan, Malaysia and Brunei Darussalam.

Only super quality rice will be exported, with a broken rate of 0 to 5 percent, and the commodity consists of Ciandjur, Pandang wangi, or another types of rice. As long as the broken rate is still within that range, it is still classified as super quality rice.

The export will be increased, if the national target to produce rice can reach 40 million tons of husked rice and 63 million tons of unhusked rice.

If the national target to produce 40 million tons of rice in 2009 could be achieved, there would at least be a rice surplus of 3 to 4 million tons. "If possible, we will export at least 3 million tons of super and medium rice to Asian countries like Malaysia, Brunei Darussalam, and medium quality rice to East Timor," he said.

"But now we are concentrating on super rice first and then we try to export medium quality rice after the national target has been achieved," he said.
In Indonesia, rice plays a crucial role, as 97 percent of the population in this world largest archipelagic country consumed rice, as indicated in the ratio of rice consumed by an individual in this country.

An Indonesian consumes 139 kilograms of rice per year, while a Malaysian only 83 kilograms per year and a Japanese 50 kilogramss.

The rice exports could be carried out either in March or April this year, depending on the approval of the trade ministry. "We have submitted a request for the exports to the trade ministry," he said.
The price of super rice is around US$400 per metric ton and if the export could reach one million tons this year, Indonesia will earn USD400 million, he said.

Indonesia's capability to export rice had surprised some other countries, because Indonesia which in 2007 still imported 1.4 million tons of rice from Vietnam and Thailand, has now become self-sufficient in rice.

But as of January, 2008, Indonesia did not import the commodity. Starting in August 2008, Indonesia to have a rice production surplus, he said, adding that if the national target could be achieved this year, Indonesia would be able to export three to four tons of the commodity.
