RUPIAH STRENGTHENS PAST RP12,000 PER DOLLAR
Jakarta, Feb 25 (ANTARA) - The rupiah strengthened past Rp12,000 per dollar in the Jakarta interbank spot market late Wednesday on investors' confidence in the government's constant efforts to maintain the local unit's stability.
The rupiah closed at Rp11,920/12,020 late Wednesday against Rp11,995/12,050 per dollar the day before.
Foreign exchange analyst Rully Nova of PT Bank Himpunan Saudara Tbk said investors were optimistic about the government's efforts to maintain the rupiah's stability after it secured standby loans to strengthen the country's foreign exchange reserves.
The confidence encouraged investors to buy the rupiah, causing the Indonesian currency to strengthen against the dollar late Wednesday, he said.
As previously expected, the rupiah would continue to strengthen despite the US dollar's appreciation against the Japanese yen following the strengthening of the Wall Street index, he said.
"We are optimistic the market sentiment will still be positive and that the rupiah will further strengthen past Rp11,900 per dollar," he said.
