World-standard oncological centre to open soon

Manama, Jan. 31 (BNA): The first oncological centre in the region will open soon at the King Hamad University Hospital (KHUH), it was announced. "The medical milestone will be the most modern and specialized", said KHUH Commander Lieutenant-General Dr. Shaikh Salman bin Ateyatalla Al-Khalifa.
In a statement to Bahrain News Agency (BNA), he said that the oncological centre would treat patients suffering from cancer, sickle cell anemia and hereditary diseases and conduct bone marrow transplants. "KHUH signed an agreement with Siemens to purchase the PET CT and the Gamma Camera in a deal costing BD520, 000, through its agent in Bahrain – Wael Pharmacy", said Dr. Shaikh Salman.
He stressed the importance of the Gamma Camera imaging and the PET CT devices, hailing the value added equipment for the molecular medical department at the oncological centre which will open its doors soon. This advanced Positron emission tomography–computed tomography (PET-CT or PET/CT) detects tiny tumors (2mm diameter), provides accurate results in diagnosis and contributes to early detection of cancer.
Dr. Shaikh Salman paid tribute to His Majesty King Hamad bin Isa Al-Khalifa, the Supreme Commander, for his directives to construct the accredited world-standard oncological centre, which would provide patients the necessary therapy instead of seeking overseas’ treatment.
