JAPANESE DIPLOMAT INAUGURATE CLEAN WATER PROJECT IN JEMBER

Jember, Indonesia, Feb. 27 (ANTARA) - Japanese Consul General Yasuji Odoko inaugurated a clean water project developed with a grant from Japan at Kemuning Lor village, Arjasa sub district, Jember District, East Java Province, on Thursday.
Consul General Yasuji Odoko said that the clean water project was implemented based on sound cooperation between Japan and Indonesia.
The clean water project cost around US$84,039 and was developed within a year, he said.
He asked local residents of Jember to take care and maintain the clean water supply facility properly so that the facility could last long.
"The Japanese government hope that the Jember people can take care of the clean water facility properly," he said.
Meanwhile, Deputy District Head of Jember Kusen Andalas said that the clean water project was carried out by empowering the local people and using a grant from the Japanese government.
He expressed his hope that the Japanese government could provide more assistance to help the residents of Jember.
According to some data, only 17 percent of the Indonesian households currently have access to piped water supply. Many families have to use contaminated water as they could not afford buying clean water.
