Sultan Mizan Wants Setiu Wetland To Be Leading Eco-Tourism Destination
SETIU (Terengganu, Malaysia) Feb 13 (Bernama) -- The King of Terengganu, Sultan Mizan Zainal Abidin wants the Setiu Wetland to be turned into another tourist attraction in line with the state government's aspiration to make Terengganu a leading eco-tourism destination in the region.
He said, apart from the state’s beautiful beaches and idyllic Islands, arts as well as cultural heritage, the uniqueness of the Setiu Wetland also had a great potential to be tapped as a renowned tourism product for the state.
“In conjunction with the World Wetland Day which is celebrated on Feb 2 every year, I hope that Terengganu will celebrate it together with the world community and look for the best method to preserve this natural treasure for the maximum benefit of the local community.
“I believe that the local community can also take the opportunity to provide suitable tourism services to visitors wishing to experience the natural environment of wetlands.
“This wetland is also rich with natural resources which I believe can generate income for the local community. Various activities can be commercialised such as breeding of honey bees and aquaculture sites,” he said when officiating the Setiu Boardwalk at Pengkalan Gelap here Monday.
The King also noted that wetlands were an important part of the environment which could serve as a natural disaster retainer, reduce the risk of flooding and drought and help us cope with extreme weather.
At the event, Sultan Mizan also launched the Birds of Terengganu book written by Anuar McAfee.
