FLOODS INUNDATE HUNDREDS OF HOUSES IN BREBES

Brebes, Feb 27 (ANTARA) - Floods triggered by incessant rain since Thursday have inundated more than 400 houses in Limbangan Kulon subdistrict, Brebes district, Central Java.

On Friday morning, following the overflowing of the Sigeleng and Limbangan rivers, the flood water level had risen to 45 - 50 centimeters.

There were no immediate reports about casualties but the activities of workers and students in the affected areas came to a halt as almost all roads leading to workplaces and schools were under flood water.

Siah (55), one of the victims, said the flood waters began to invade houses in the area and continued to rise on Friday morning to knee depth.

"We hardly slept last night because the water level in our house continued to rise," Siah said.

Meanwhile, Budi Harsono, a Limbangan villager, said he was not surprised at the flood when it hit Limbangan subdistrict on Friday morning because it was routine disaster every year.

The current rainy season has triggered floods and landslides in various parts of Indonesia, including in East Java, Central Java, West Java, South Sulawesi, East Kalimantan, and Aceh provinces.

La Nina, which is developing into Northern Hemisphere Spring 2009, is expected to cause above-average precipitation over Indonesia, during January-March 2009, according to the US NOAA's Climate Prediction Center (CPC) recently.
