PRESIDENT LEAVES FOR HUA HIN TO ATTEND ASEAN SUMMIT

Hua Hin, Feb. 27 (ANTARA) - President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono was scheduled to leave Jakarta on Friday for Hua Hin, Thailand, to attend the 14th Summit of ASEAN.

The President's entourage would include First Lady Ani Yudhoyono, Minister/Cabinet Secretary Sudi Silalahi, and Dino Patti Djalal, a presidential spokesperson.

Foreign Affairs Minister Hassan Wirayuda, who arrived in Hua Hin on Thursday, said that President Yudhoyono was scheduled to chair annual consultative meetings on regional cooperation on the sidelines of the 14th ASEAN Summit.

On Saturday morning, prior to the opening of the ASEAN Summit, the President will chair annual consultative meetings of BIMP EAGA (Brunei, Indonesia, Malaysia and the Philippines - East ASEAN Growth Area) and IMT GT (Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand Growth Triangle).

President Yudhoyono was also scheduled to hold a bilateral meeting with his Singaporean counterpart.

After the sub-regional Summit, the President and other ASEAN Heads of State/Government will hold a meeting with ASEAN Parliamentary representatives.

Indonesia will be represented by House Speaker Agung Laksono and Abdillah Toha, a legislator from the National Mandate Party (PAN). Rafendy Djamin, an Indonesian human rights activist, will represent the Indonesian youths and civil society in the meeting.

"The three parties, namely the Parliament, youths and civil society, represent the ASEAN people, in line with the ASEAN Charter which stipulates that ASEAN as a regional organization indeed has a bigger place for them to make ASEAN a more people-oriented organization," Minister Wirayuda, said.

The 14th ASEAN Summit would be focused on the efforts to implement the ASEAN Charter, which was launched on December 15, 2008, he said.

The ASEAN leaders would also launch a blue print of ASEAN economic community, as well as security, political and socio-cultural cooperation, according to the minister.

Other topics of discussion in the Summit would be issues on food resilience, energy, disaster mitigation and management, and solution to the current global economic crisis.
