GOVT ASKED TO HELP SOLVE KNPI'S INTERNAL CONFLICT
Jakarta, Feb 27 (ANTARA) - A former Indonesian National Youth Committee (KNPI) executive has called on President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono and Vice President Jusuf Kalla to help solve KNPI's internal conflict which has split the organization into two camps.
Former KNPI secretary general Munawar Fuad said here on Friday
the Committee's internal conflict was a serious matter and if the government failed to do something about it, the antagonism would jeopardize national integrity and democracy in the country.
"Lest the KNPI break up under the SBY-JK administration, I call on the two leaders to intervene in the conflict to solve it," Munawar Fuad said, adding KNPI's disintegration would be a baneful historical precedent.
He said the KNPI's leadership at national level was now split into two camps with one side led by Ahmad Doli Kurnia (elected chaiman at KNPI's Ancol congress) and the other side led by Aziz Syamsuddin (elected chairman at the KNPI's Bali congress).
On Thursday (February 26, 2009, members of the two camps engaged in a brawl at the KNPI building on Rasuna Said street in South Jakarta causing material damage to the building and a number of motorcycles, and leaving several people injured.
South Jakarta police officials who arrived at the scene moments after the incident arrested dozens of people allegedly involved in the fighting and took the injured to nearby MMC Kuningan hospital.
Fuad said the leaders of youth organizations affiliated to KNPI and the Regional Representatives Council (DPD could also play an important role in efforts to save the KNPI if they were able to free themselves from the "culture of corruption, money politics, personal interests, and their tendency to take political advantage of the KNPI."
"The KNPI will become stunted and barren if the two rival camps continue to act as if KNPI were their personal property. Therefore, the internal conflict should be solved immediately," he said.
He also called on State Minister for Youth and Sports Affairs Adhyaksa Dault, who is a former KNPI chairman, to help solve the problem.
