PINDAD TO BUILD 134 ARMORED PERSONNEL CARRIERS THIS YEAR
Jakarta, Feb 27 (ANTARA) - State-owned arms maker PT Pindad has stated its ability to complete 134 6x6 medium armored personnel (APS) carriers ordered by the government in 2009.
"We willl do our best to finish construction of the 134 APS carriers according to the schedule," Adik Avianto Soedarsono, PT Pindad president director, said after handing over 20 units of 6X6 APS-2 carriers to the government in Bandung, West Java, Friday.
The Defense Ministry had ordered 154 APS carriers for the Army from PT Pindad. The company had already delivered 20 of 154 ordered units to the Army.
He said construction of the 134 APS carriers ordered by the defense ministry would be done based on budget support from the government and supply of engines by French company Renault.
"With a production capacity of 16 units per month, we are confident that we will be able to finish them on time," the PT Pindad chief said.
The funds for the construction of 154 armored APS-2 carriers were to be taken from the state budget, and for its initial working capital PT Pindad would obtain funds from Bank BNI, Bank Mandiri and Bank BRI.
Meanwhile, PT Pindad commercial director Wahyu Utomo said that besides funding problems, the other constraint faced in the construction of the 134 armored cars was the availability of engines which were so far provided by Renault.
"We face constraints in obtaining the engines. France could produce only 20 units in 2008 and 130 in 2009," he said.
He said Pindad was able to finish construction of the bodies of 130 carriers in one year.
The armored carriers, each weighing a maximum of 12 tons, are coated in 8-10 mm bullet-proof monocoque. With a capacity of carrying 15 personnel, the carrier is equipped with eight reconnaissance mirrors, eight firing holes and two sets of launcher tubes.
On the carrier's roof is a copula that can turn 360 degrees to enable personnel inside the vehicle to fire an AGL or SMB in any direction.
