LION AIR REQUESTED TO REPLACE ITS MD PLANES
Jakarta, Feb 27 (ANTARA) - Transportation Minister Jusman Syafii Djamal had called on Lion Air to replace its MD airplanes following the emergency landing of one of its MD-90s at Batam's Hang Nadim airport on Monday.
"I called the airlines on the phone asking it to consider replacing its MD airliners," the minister said here on Friday.
Djamal said that he had made the call in order to help Lion Air maintain the good image it already had with its new Boeing 737-900 ER fleet, although its airliners were wasteful in their fuel consumption.
On the occasion, the minister appreciated pilot Anwar Haryanto who he said was professional in saving the life of passengers when he made an emergency landing at Hang Nadim airport.
He said that he had received a report that the plane was actually airworthy because it always received a good maintenance.
A Lion Air MD on the Medan-Surabaya route, with 156 passengers on board, made an emergency landing at Batam's Hang Nadim airport Monday afternoon.
The Lion Air MD with flight registration number JT 972, took off from Medan at 4.30 p.m, but when about on a transit at Hang Nadim, its front landing gears failed to appear.
The pilot when still in the air reduced the aircraft's fuel before making a hard landing at 5.30 p.m and the plane came to a halt with its nose brushing the ground.***5***
