Festivals Calendar - March 2009

SEOUL, Feb. 28 (Yonhap) -- The following are the major cultural and tourist festivals to be held in South Korea in March.

*Nami Island Foreigners Festival
When: Feb. 28-March 8
Where: Nami Island in Chuncheon, Gangwon Province
Nami Island in Gangwon Province, famous for its over 300 species of trees, has
become a "must see" for many foreigners, in particular Japanese tourists who
want to capture the mood portrayed by the stars of famous TV drama series
"Winter Sonata" which is set on the island.
Only a 10-minute ferry ride from Gapyeong, Gyeonggi Province, the island features
bronze sculptures of Bae Yong-jun and Choi Ji-woo waiting in the lake at the main
gate. The sculptures were created for about 20 million won, along with Bae's
character Jun-sang's house.
Festival programs will include performances by traditional and modern artists,
jazz concerts, screening of independent and animation films and traditional
Korean culture experiences. During the festival period, foreigners will have free

* Gorosoe (Painted Maple Sap) Festival
When: March 7
Where: Namwon, North Jeolla Province
The sap of the painted maple (gorosoe) is believed to have medicinal effects.
Across areas covering Mt. Jiri's Baemsagol Valley, Dalgung, Banya Peak and
Jungryungchi, the sap is collected from mid-February to mid-March. The festival
features mountain spirit worshipping, mountaineering competitions, painted maple
sap drinking and other activities. The sap is said to be effective in curing
stomach and lung diseases, high blood pressure, neuralgia, arthritis, eczema,
constipation, post-natal conditions and various other adult diseases.

* Tongyeong International Music Festival
When: March 27-April 2
Where: Tongyeong Arts Center, Tongyeong, South Gyeongsang Province
The Munich Chamber Orchestra under the baton of Alexander Liebreich will open the
2009 spring season of Tongyeong International Music Festival on March 27.
A total of 17 concerts will be held until April 2 at the Tongyeong Arts Center,
including ones by Next Mushroom Promotion, an ensemble of flute, piano, violin
viola and cello, Roby Lakatos Ensemble and the Final Concert titled "Song of the
Earth."
. The festival was established to honor Yun Isang (1917-1995), Korea's greatest
composer of contemporary music born in Tongyeong.

* Sansuyu (Cornus officinalis) Flower Festival
When: March 19-22
Where: Mount Jiri, Gurye, South Jeolla Province
The hot spring district of Mount Jiri will be bathed in a sea of yellow in March
as blooming Sansuyu flowers cover the mountain. Some 70 events will be held
during the festival. The program includes good harvest rituals, performances of
Korean vocal music, farmers' music and dance as well as performances of
traditional cultural arts from around the world. Wine and cake making with the
Sansuyu flower will also be demonstrated.

* Japanese apricot festival
When: March 14-22
Where: Gwangyang, South Jeolla Province
Various performances will be held for a week in the southern village of Daapmeyon
in Gwangyang, South Jeolla Province. Wines and food made from apricots will be
displayed and sold amid the beautiful scenery of the coastal village. For more

Seogwipo International Walking Festival
* When: March 27-29
* Where: Plaza of Jeju World Cup Stadium and nearby areas, Jeju island
Visitors will be able to participate in one of the four walking courses - 5
kilometers, 10 kilometers, 20 kilometers and 30 kilometers, along the beautiful
backdrop of gorgeous rape flowers in the southern resort island of Jeju.
Organizers expect some 20,000 people, including foreigners, will participate in
the festival which will also offer a night of international friendship and a fair
