PRESIDENT TO OPEN WORLD ISLAMIC ECONOMIC FORUM
Jakarta, Feb 28 (ANTARA) - President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono is on Sunday slated to open the 5th World Islamic Economic Forum (WIEF) which will take place in Jakarta March 1-4, 2009, a spokesman for the event's organizers said.
Regional Representatives Council (DPD) Vice Chairman Irman Gusman who is concurrently the WIEF steering committee's chairman, said Friday the forum's theme this year was "Food and Energy Security and Stemming the Tide of the Global Financial Crisis."
He said development projects in 12 provinces in the country would be promoted during the forum, while discussions in the forum would be on food and energy resilience and efforts to overcome the global financial crisis on the basis of bottom line business.
Gusman said Middle Eastern countries had budget surpluses totaling US$1.5 trillion kept in the so-called Sovereign Wealth Funds (SWF).
A Sovereign Wealth Fund is a state-owned investment fund composed of financial assets such as stocks, bonds, property, precious metals or other financial instruments.
Other countries such as Singapore, Malaysia, and China also had SWFs, and therefore Indonesia was advised to benefit from those funds by inviting Middle East countries to invest in Indonesia.
In the 5th WIEF, issues related to technology, business, small and medium scale business, and banking would also be discussed in addition to food and energy resilience.
Area of cooperation to be discussed in the forum would be investment in agriculture, energy, transportation, finance, banking, health, science and technology.
A number of state/government leaders of Muslim countries among others Saudi Arabia, Yemen, Oman, United Arab Emirates, Bahrain, Qatar, Iraq, Kuwait, Jordan, Malaysia, and Senegal would attend the forum.
State/government leaders from other non-Muslim countries such as Russia, Sweden, Britain, and China, and other business leaders interested in business opportunities would also attend the forum.
