ISLAMIC BOOK FAIR BEING HELD IN JAKARTA UNTIL MARCH 8
Jakarta, Feb. 28 (ANTARA) - The 8th Islamic Book Fair (IBF) was officially opened by Prof. Dr. Nasaruddin Umar, the religious affairs ministry's director general of Islamic community guidance, here on Saturday.
The book fair is being held at Soekarno Sports Stadium, Senayan, Central Jakarta, from February 28 until March 8, 2009.
Prof. Nasaruddin Umar in his opening speech that the Islamic book development in Indonesia was at its peak, as never before so many books have been published like now.
The recently published books were both translation and those written by Indonesian authors, he said.
He urged publishers and book traders to provide more appreciations to Indonesian authors to motive them to write better books qualitatively and quantitatively.
Umar also urged the book fair's organizing committee to send free books to people living in isolated areas, like what the committee had done last year.
Meanwhile, Chairman of the 8th IBF Organizing Committee Anis Baswedan said that some 134 participants are taking part in the Islamic Book Fair.
They comprise 95 book publishers, 30 multi-product companies, six media partners, and two foreign participants respectively coming from Egypt and Brunei Darussalam.
The Islamic Book Fair offers among other things 30,000 new book titles and Muslim dresses.
The nine-day book fair is expected to attract around 300,000 visitors, according to Baswedan.
During the opening ceremony, the Jakarta Book Publishers' Association (IKAPI) presented an award of "the 2009 Islamic Book Prominent Figure" to Prof. Dr. Quraish Shihab, an Indonesian noted Islamic intellectual and former Indonesian ambassador to Egypt.
The book fair, Indonesia's largest Islamic book fair, is to be highlighted with a series of 70 activities, such as meetings with national authors, IBF Award presentation, discussions, and book reviews.
This year's theme of IBF is "To enlighten the Muslims and To Make the Nation Self-reliant".
