PRESIDENT YUDHOYONO CHAIRS IMT-GT SUMMIT

Hua Hin, Feb. 28 (ANTARA) - President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono chaired the 4th Summit of Indonesia-Malaysia-Thailand Growth Triangle (IMT GT) here on Saturday, prior to the opening of the 14th ASEAN Summit scheduled for later in the day.

Indonesia currently chairs the 4th IMT GT Summit and the 5th BIMP EAGA Summit, according to a statement issued by Dino Patti Djalal, a presidential spokesperson.

After chairing the 4th IMT GT Summit for about one hour, President Yudhoyono will lead the 5th Summit of Brunei Darussalam-Indonesia-Malaysia-Philippines East ASEAN Growth Area (BIMP EAGA), for another hour.

IMT-GT is a subregional cooperation initiative formed in 1993 by the governments of Indonesia, Malaysia, and Thailand to accelerate economic transformation in less developed provinces. The private sector has played and will continue to play a key role in promoting economic cooperation in IMT-GT.

Since its formation, the IMT-GT has grown in geographic scope and activities to encompass more than 70 million people. It is now composed of 14 provinces in southern Thailand, 8 states in Peninsular Malaysia, and the 10 provinces of Sumatra in Indonesia.

BIMP-EAGA was formally launched on March 24, 1994 in Davao City in Mindanao, Philippines.
EAGA's strategic objective is to accelerate economic development, improve export competitiveness and enhance the attractiveness of EAGA to local and foreign investment based among other things on economic complementarity and shared natural resources.

To achieve its goals, the founders of BIMP-EAGA recognized the need for strong public-private sector partnership in development and agreed that growth of the subregion must be market-driven and private sector-led.

After chairing the IMT-GT and BIMP-EAGA Summits, President Yudhoyono will attend informal meetings among ASEAN heads of state/government with ASEAN Inter-Parliamentary Assembly representatives, ASEAN Youth representatives, and ASEAN Civil Society representatives.

The 14th ASEAN Summit will be officially opened on Saturday afternoon local time.
