RI, SINGAPORE DISCUSS IMPACT OF FINANCIAL CRISIS

Hua Hin, Feb 28 (ANTARA) - Indonesian President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono and Singapore Prime Minister Lee Hsien-Loong met to discuss the impact of current global financial crisis here on Saturday.

The meeting was held at around 4.20pm at Hotel Hyatt on the sidelines of the 14th summit of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (Asean).

"The main topics of discussion were G20 and the crisis. Howlong will it (the crisis) last. Will it be able to recover in a year or two years," foreign minister Hassan Wirajuda said after the meeting.

He said even the US government could not tell when the crisis would end.

"Will it (its impact) be like a V, L or U curve. Or It may be a U curve but a long U curve before it moves up again. Or it may be an L curve," he said.

In view of that, the minister said, the bilateral efforts such as cooperation between Indonesia and Singapore and other efforts within the Asean framework in particular are needed to solidify the region's economic integration.

"The blueprint for the envisaged economic community could be used for regional cooperation including with East Asia so that we could overcome the impact of the crisis well," he said.

The meeting between the two leaders occured before the Asean heads of government and state paid a courtesy call on the Thai King at the Klai Kang Wang summer palace.
