M'SIAN CITIZENSHIP OF INDONESIAN WORKERS' CHILDREN SCRAPPED

Kuala Lumpur, Feb 28 (ANTARA) - Indonesian vice ambassador to Malaysia Tatang B Razak said the Malaysian government had recently revoked the Malaysian citizenship of children of Idonesian workers in the neighboring country.

As a consquence, the children concerned were no longer allowed to study at Malaysian national schools and required to make their own passports as Indonesian citizens.

"Many workers have come to the embassy to report the status of their children. Some of them have even been living in Malaysia for over ten years and their children have already obtained Malaysian birth certificates but they have now been rescinded," he said.

"Consequently, their children are not allowed to study at Malaysian national schools. The children were asked to make Indonesian passports," he said when opening Golkar party's campaign in Kuala Lumpur, on Satuday.

In the Golkar party's campaign wrapped in the form of a seminar on Educational Policy against Indonesian youths in foreign countries, it was reported that parents with their children who were born in Malaysia and who had already possessed Malaysian birth certificates were at a sudden deprived and were then evicted from their schools.

Tatang saw there was an effort to use this issue to harm better relations between Indonesia and Malaysia. "Last year, some children were not allowed to study anymore at Malaysian national schools. After we handled the case to the Malaysian ministry, the students were again allowed to study."
But lately, the case came up to surface at the time when Malaysian national schools started new enrollment for students in January.

Tatang quoted a statement of Malaysian education minister who said national schools were not allowed to drop students out of the school on account of having no Malaysian birth certificate. As long as one of their parents was a Malaysian, the children concerned were allowed to study at Malaysian national schools.
An Indonesian worker who refused to be identified said there were some reasons why Malaysia deprived their citizenship.

Firstly, when Indonesian female workers gave birth to their babies at the hospital, many of them borrowed the ID cards of Malaysians, so that the hospital management deemed them as Malaysian citizen. But then, it was known that they were Indonesian citizens.

Secondly, many children of Indonesian workers who have held Malaysian citizenship then moved to Indonesia for ever. The Malaysian birth certificates were then sold to their neighbors in their village who wished to resettle in Malaysia.
