BIMP-EAGA DISCUSSES REGIONAL DEVELOPMENT ROAD MAP

Hua Hin, Feb 28 (ANTARA) - Indonesian President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono here presided over the fifth BIMP EAGA summit to discuss a road map for development of the region.

"The meeting heard a report from acting coordinating minister for the economy, Sri Mulyani, of Indonesia, the current chair of the Brunei, Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines East Asian Growth Area (BIMP-EAGA)," Indonesian presidential spokesman Dino Patti Djalal said here on Saturday afternoon.

He said Sri Mulyani on the occasion reported about what had been done in the past two years.

He said there were three sectors being discussed at the meeting namely transportation, tourism development and trade.

"There was a lot of discussion on issue of land, air as well as sea transportation infrastructure that links the three sectors and requires further development," he said.

Leaders at the meeting also agreed for the development of the BIMP-EAGA to become a reliable food producing center because of the region's its potentials, land fertility and agricultural knowledge.

"There have been calls on local administrations to be active in exploiting cooperation potentials and sources that have so far been built at a national level," he said.

The Asian Development Bank (ADB), he said, has expressed its readiness to help the process of integration of every areas in the BIMP-EAGA.

"The ADB president just now also expressed his committment to continuing to help advance the cooperation. Being discussed now is how to smoothen border-crossing trade and others and the best incentive to increase investment, trade, tourism and economic prosperity," he said.

Dino said they had also proposed creating a mechanism for discussing the cooperation more integratedly.

The meeting was held following the 4th summit of the Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand Growth Triangle (IMT-GT) at the same place, in which Indonesia was its chair.
