Bahrain marks International Women's Day

Manama, Mar. 8 (BNA): Bahrain today joined the other nations in the world in marking the International Women's Day, which falls on the 8th of March. The Shura Council stressed the importance of the day, which is observed all over the world. In a statement issued today, the Human Rights Committee stressed the need to undertake a review and build on the achievements and gains to further improve the standing of women in the world. The statement reiterated Bahrain’s keenness on joining international conventions, including The Convention on the Elimination of all Forms of Discrimination against Women (CEDAW). It commended the strenuous efforts of the Council of Representatives and the Shura Council to bring laws in Bahrain in line with the CEDAW provisions. The committee hailed the landmark achievements under the reform project which was launched by His Majesty King Hamad bin Isa Al-Khalifa, commending the Government-led efforts to further strengthen equal partnership between all citizens. The committee paid tribute to Her Royal Highness Princess Sabeeka bint Ibrahim Al-Khalifa, Wife of HM the King and President of the Supreme Council for Women, hailing Bahraini women’s political, administrative, social, economic, legal and judicial strides. The Human Rights Committee commended the pivotal role of the civil society institutions in Bahrain, which contributed to the enhancement of women’s standing and their empowerment.
